Detection and Mitigation of JIT-Induced Side Channels
Wed 8 Jul 2020 02:10 - 03:00 at SRC Poster Special Room - P305-SRC-Posters
Just-In-Time (JIT) compilation can introduce timing side channels into seemingly safe source code as it attempts to optimize paths it deems “hot”. In this abstract, I introduce a class of side-channel vulnerabilities arising due to this behavior: JIT-induced side channels. I discuss my results in inducing JIT side channels in Java and JavaScript functions as well as on the Apache Shiro framework and open-source Graphhopper routing library. I also discuss my research and results on automating the induction of JIT-based side channels into runtimes. Finally, I develop a strategy to mitigate JIT-based side channels while preserving performance based on ideas from differential privacy.
